چکیده

Levels of indoor nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in a home equipped with butane gas stove and heaters are reported between the months of February and July 2003. Diffusion passive sampling was used for the simultaneous measurements of indoor and outdoor NO2 concentrations. The overall average indoor NO2 concentrations were 15.6 and 22.3 g m 3 for the living room and kitchen, respectively, while that for outdoors was 17.9 g m . In order to assess the input of indoor combustion to exchanged outdoor levels of NO2, the ratios of the living room and kitchen NO2 values to their corresponding outdoor levels were found to be higher in winter than in spring and summer. An I/O ratio as high as 2.1 detected in winter was attributed to the excess use of butane gas heaters in both the kitchen and the living room. Other sources and fates of indoor NO2 are also evaluated. This study will have significant effects on estimating health risks related to the used of butane gas heaters in residential homes.

Home interventions are effective at decreasing indoor nitrogen dioxide concentrations.

UNLABELLED Nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ), a by-product of combustion produced by indoor gas appliances such as cooking stoves, is associated with respiratory symptoms in those with obstructive airways disease. We conducted a three-armed randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of interventions aimed at reducing indoor NO2 concentrations in homes with unvented gas stoves: (i) replacement of existing ...

Indoor pollutants and asthma in children

WHAT DO WE KNOW? In many children asthma is closely associated with allergy, and many asthmatic children are allergic to dust mite and pet allergens. For them, reduction of exposure is likely to be beneficial. But does this mean that mite and pet exposure causes asthma? This issue is surprisingly complex. Whereas studies suggest that exposure to specific allergens increases sensitisation to tho...

Commentary: nitrogen dioxide and asthma redux.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a combustion-generated oxidant gas, is widely present in indoor and outdoor environments. Outdoors, where it comes primarily from combustion engines, industry, and power generation, it is a precursor to particles and ozone. Indoors, NO2 is generated by gas cooking and heating, and it exists as a gas along with other oxides of nitrogen. Many epidemiological studies have e...

Wood stove effects on indoor air quality in Brazilian homes: carcinogens, suspended particulate matter, and nitrogen dioxide analysis.

The effects of wood burning stoves on indoor air quality was investigated in a rural community of southern Brazil, during the winter season of 1991. The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) were assessed in houses with wood stoves and the results compared with levels found in houses with gas stoves. Strikingly h...
